Shanxi Institute of Coal Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, formerly known as the Coal Research Office of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was founded in 1954 at the Institute of Petroleum, Chinese Academy of Sciences (now Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics). In 1961, the coal research laboratory was expanded to the Institute of Coal Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and began to move to Taiyuan. In September 1978, it was renamed as Shanxi Institute of Coal Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences and has been used since then.

Since its establishment, Shanxi Coal Chemical Corporation has coordinated the resolution of energy utilization efficiency and ecological environment issues, and focused on breaking through the bottleneck of advanced materials that restricts the development of national strategic emerging industries. It has broken through a series of key technologies in the field of energy and materials, meeting the strategic and significant needs of national energy strategic security and sustainable socio-economic development. During the 14th Five Year Plan period, Shanxi Coal Chemical Institute will face major national needs and the main economic battlefield, focusing on the national carbon peaking and carbon neutrality strategy deployment. It will focus on four main directions: efficient and low-carbon utilization of coal, preparation and application of carbon based new materials, core and key materials for hydrogen and fuel cells, collaborative control of pollutants, and waste resource utilization, and carry out targeted basic research, key core technology research, and major system integration innovation, Leading the development direction of green, low-carbon and high-end carbon based materials in coal, becoming a strong innovative, influential, and irreplaceable strategic technological force in China's energy and materials fields. As of the end of 2022, Shanxi Coal Chemical Institute has a total of 496 in-service employees. Among them, there are 433 scientific and technological personnel, including 78 researchers and senior engineering and technical personnel, and 148 associate researchers and senior engineering and technical personnel. Among them, there are 4 recipients of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, 2 recipients of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, 4 key technical talents of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 outstanding members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Youth Promotion Association, 7 academic leaders in Shanxi Province, and 8 leading talents in emerging industries in Shanxi Province.

Shanxi Coal Chemical Institute has Taiyuan Taonan Park and Xiaodian Park; It has national research and development units such as the National Key Laboratory for Efficient and Low Carbon Utilization of Coal (preparatory), the National Engineering Research Center for Indirect Coal Liquefaction, the National Engineering Research Center for Carbon Fiber Preparation Technology, the Shanxi International Research and Development Center for Coal Chemical Technology, and the National Coal based Synthesis Engineering Technology Research Center jointly built with Lu'an Group; Academies, such as Key Laboratory of Carbon Materials of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Shanxi Province), Shanxi Powder Coal gasification Engineering Research Center, Shanxi Biorefinery Engineering Technology Research Center, Graphene Technology Engineering Research Center, Shanxi Thermoplastic Composite Engineering Research Center, provincial research and development units, and institute level research and development units of Applied Catalysis and Green Chemical Laboratory.

Shanxi Institute of Coal and Chemical Industry is one of the first batch of awarding units of doctor's and master's degrees approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in 1981. Currently, there are 50 doctoral supervisors and 62 master's supervisors. It has three first-class disciplines, namely, chemistry, Chemical engineering and technology, and materials science and engineering; There are two full-time Professional degree authorization centers of materials and chemistry, resources and environment, and one first-class discipline postdoctoral mobile station of chemistry. There are a total of 396 in-service graduate students (including 182 master's and 214 doctoral students).

Shanxi Coal Chemical Institute has sponsored academic journals such as "Journal of Fuel Chemistry (in Chinese and English)" and "New Carbon Materials (in Chinese and English)", both of which are included in the "Overview of Chinese Core Journals". Among them, the Journal of Fuel Chemistry (in Chinese and English) is included in the EI COMPENDEX database and collaborated with Elsevier Publishing Group to publish the English online version of the Journal of Fuel Chemistry and Technology; New Carbon Materials (Chinese and English) has been included in the SCI-E database and EI COMPENDEX database, and has collaborated with Elsevier Publishing Group to publish the English online version of ScienceDirect. The Journal of Fuel Chemistry (in both Chinese and English) has won the national "Top 100 Science and Technology Journals" and "China's Excellent Science and Technology Journals", and "New Carbon Materials (in both Chinese and English)" has won the national "Top 100 Science and Technology Journals" and the "China Publishing Government Award Nomination Award".

A total of 247 national science conference awards, the State Technological Innovation Award, national scientific and technological progress award, Chinese Academy of Sciences scientific and technological achievement award, invention award, natural science award, outstanding achievement award, provincial and ministerial scientific and technological achievement award, and 865 national authorized patents were awarded.

Shanxi Coal Chemical Institute will focus on optimizing the talent team, taking the implementation of major projects as the driving force, using foreign cooperation and exchange as the window, and innovation platform construction as the guarantee. It will comprehensively implement the "First Action" plan, actively play the leading and demonstration role of national scientific research institutions in the construction of the national innovation system, and continuously accelerate the pace of modern research institute construction.
